Chicane-Latine commencement at UCSC on East Field

Review of External Credit

The Review of External Credit (REC) form is for reporting concerns about your awarded credit or to confirm transferability for coursework not yet taken.

The REC form is appropriate for any concerns having to do with credit earned outside UC Santa Cruz (i.e. transfer, exam, study abroad, high school, etc.) Concerns may include but are not limited to: general education (GE) credit, specific course credit, unit credit, and/or satisfaction of university requirements (ELWR and AH&I), especially when an official equivalency resource such as ASSIST or the exam equivalency chart indicate certain credit should have been awarded.

The REC form is not intended for new GE or course credit petitions. If you plan to ask for specific GE and/or course credit and you do not have documentation of prior-approval (such as ASSIST), the Review of External Credit is not the appropriate form.

New General Education Petitions

To petition for a new GE equivalency, submit a GE Substitution Petition with the Committee on Courses of Instruction (CCI).

New Course Equivalency Petitions

For specific course credit contact your major advisor for assistance. If the equivalency is approved, the course sponsoring agency should contact the DPU at transfercredit@ucsc.edu to update the awarded credit.

The REC form is intended to be open-ended and flexible to any issues regarding external credit. Here are a few tips to help ensure a rapid review:

  • The most common credit types and issues are selectable in the drop down menus. If you don’t see yours, select “Other.”
  • Use the “Describe the issue or question” text box to help us understand the issue. Be as detailed as possible including the specific external courses or exams taken and what you expected to receive.
  • Include relevant links and attach supporting documents such as screenshots, syllabi, or other academic records if it is helpful.
  • If looking to establish transferability of an external course, provide links to the courses in the catalog from the external school. Though sometimes difficult, try to get a copy of the syllabus for the course ahead of time.

After Submitting the Form

Keep an eye on your email for any possible follow up questions and a final decision. REC forms are typically reviewed within 3-5 business days. If follow up items are requested, you will receive an email saying your REC has been “recycled,” and will prompt you to log in to respond to any comments. Being attentive to these requests will allow us to address your concerns in a rapid manner.
